SECTION 3 – POSTERS

SECTION 4 – SNAPS BACK DANCE

SECTION 8 – PITCH-IN

SECTION 9 – EVEN MORE – DIGITAL LITERACY – RESOURCES

Kids really love the internet and social media in particular, but for several years now, it’s been obvious to me that the enormous volume of, misinformation, disinformation, and general silliness on the internet was doing bad things to our kids, and they needed some help weeding through all that madness.

Specifically, they need tools to help them be better critical thinkers, better at asking questions about social media posts, and most of all, being better digital citizens in the 21st Century.

So I gathered many experts, and wrote, produced, and created… this campaign – MEDIA MASTERS ROCK. It’s specifically created for teachers in Alabama and yet it can also be a tool for teachers all over the world (standards seem to be very similar everywhere).

So I paid for them, but it’s all FREE for you, because I really want your kids to be the most successful they can be.

I also believe we can, with just a little guidance, we humans, can be more civilized, more honest, our kids can be better critical thinkers, and most of all, we can all be just a bit kinder (while still being truthful) to each other.

Media Masters Rocks materials are all COS – Course of Study Correlated to Digital Literacy Standards, but they are fun and they will STICK with your kids.

Kids will use the materials in MEDIA MASTERS ROCK!!!

SECTION 2 – LYRIC VIDEOS

LYRIC VIDEOS – my amazing friend Anthony Brooks (we call him AB) is a terrific beat-boxer (he makes music using only his tongue, lips, mouth, and sounds he creates with his body).

He and I have written some fun songs that correlate directly with our ed-videos, and with COS standards. We call these LYRIC VIDEOS.

AB produced, vocalized (ie beat-boxed), recorded, and arranged these songs. I – LOVE – them!

I think you’ll find them to be fun, a bit silly, and truly amazing! He was going for the old-school – 1970’s – feeling of SCHOOL HOUSE ROCK, and I think he accomplished exactly that!

The fun lyric videos are Alabama – COURSE OF STUDY – DIGITAL LITERACY correlated and we’ve created some amazing, and engaging ACTIVITY GUIDES that make the lyric videos even more impactful.

Grade K-2 – ACTIVITY PLANS – FOR ALL – 4 – LYRIC VIDEOS

Grade 3-6 – ACTIVITY PLANS – FOR ALL – 4 – LYRIC VIDEOS

Grade 7-8 – ACTIVITY PLANS – FOR ALL – 4 – LYRIC VIDEOS

All songs are written by Steve Trash and Anthony Brooks

LYRIC VIDEO #1 – THE RUBBER BAND RULE – IT SNAPS BACK

IT SNAPS BACK – LYRICS
uh
rockin with the Trash Man once again
just a reminder about social media
check it
It snaps back
like a rubber band
uh
what you post comes back again
you think you flexin now
you should understand
that uh
it snaps back like a rubber band
it snaps back
like a rubber band
uh
what you post
comes back again
you think you flexing now
but you should understand
that uh
it snaps back like a rubber band
it snaps back
all I’m trying to say is we gotta be very very careful
when we’re on social media
uh
what you post right now
think it’s all a game
but years down the line
it could stain your name
DMs ain’t private
they get exposed

screenshots live longer than
the freshest clothes
so think twice,

before you hit that “send”

cause the ‘net don’t forget
and it don’t pretend
so think twice,
before you hit that “send”
the ‘net’ don’t play
and it ain’t your friend
it snaps back,
like a rubber band,
uh

what you post comes back again
you think you flexin now’
but you should understand
that uh
it snaps back like a rubber band
it snaps back
like a rubber band
what you post
comes back again
you think you flexin now
but you should understand
it snaps back like a rubber band
it snaps back

LYRIC VIDEO 2 – AQBS RULE – ASK QUESTIONS. BE SKEPTICAL.

AQBS RULE – LYRICS
before you respond
before you repost
well well
before you comment
and share
ask a question
before you respond
before you repost
well well
before you comment
and share
ask a question
be skeptical
my friend
before you send it in
pause a second
take your time
check it out
you’ll be fine
review the situation
and
see if it is true
don’t let that rubber band
snap back on you
hoo
before you respond
before you repost
where, where
before you comment
and share
ask a question
before you respond
before you repost
well well
before you comment
and share
ask a question
be skeptical
my friend
before you send it in
pause a second
take your time
check it out
you’ll be fine
review the situation
and see if it is true
don’t let that rubber band
snap back on you

LYRIC VIDEO 3 – WHO GETS THE CANDY

WHO GETS THE CANDY – LYRICS
well I saw a post
that caught my eye
and it made me laugh
and I wondered why
so I took a thought
now
what’s all this about
“likes” feel real good
but don’t forget
it’s a tricky world
on the internet
so stop and think
before you
send it out
oh tell me
who gets the candy
well is it you or me
for the
money
 fame
and fortune
popularity
cause every
post has a reason
just you wait and see
so tell me
who gets the candy
trick or treat
oh tell me
who gets the candy
well is it you or me
and or the money
fame
or fortune
popularity
and every post
has a reason
just you wait and see
so tell me
who gets the candy
trick or treat

LYRIC VIDEO 4 – HOW FULL IS IT – FULL OF KINDNESS

HOW FULL IS IT – LYRICS

1234
see a post online
stop a second

take your time
ask before you share

is it true

or is it fair

tell me is it

helpful

is it hurtful

come on

is it truthful

and let the kindness

lead the way

words are powerful

you see

shaping your reality

take a moment

think through
would you like

this said to you

tell me is it

helpful

is it hurtful

come on

is it truthful

and let your

kindness lead the way

now if it’s hurtful
let it go
spread some love

and let it show

pause a second

it’s okay

just let your kindness

lead the way

tell me is it

helpful

is it hurtful

come on
is it truthful
and let your kindness
lead the way
tell me is it
helpful
is it hurtful
is it truthful
and let your kindness
lead the way

SECTION 4 – SNAPS BACK DANCE

Anthony Brooks texted me one morning and it said, “why don’t we make a DANCE song?”

I said, “what do you mean?”

He said, “you know a song with super-simple dance-moves that kids can do. They can practice the moves, shoot a video, and then post THEMSELVES on social media doing SNAPS BACK DANCE. This could be done in gym classes, in classrooms, churches, or even families could do it at home.”

I said, “genius… lets do it.”

So we did!

Snaps Back Dance song takes the RUBBER BAND RULE idea (that everything you do on social media snaps back on you) and makes a fun and original dance song out of it.

It’s fun. It’s easy. Not only is it reinforcing the Media Masters idea, but the kids will get some air in their lungs and maybe even laugh a little.

Would you like your kids to learn the SNAPS BACK DANCE? Great!

Here’s a short explainer video. Thanks to our friend CHARNELL for sharing the “how to” with us.

Snaps Back Dance LYRICS

SECTION 9 – EVEN MORE – DIGITAL LITERACY – RESOURCES

Teach Your Kid Critical Thinking Skills

Our interactive courses, worksheets, and lesson plans help kids develop the skills to communicate clearly, think logically, and make well-informed decisions.

Kialo Edu

Kialo Edu is a free, online discussion platform for educators and students alike. Kialo Edu strives to teach critical thinking by fostering reasoned, inclusive discussions that students are genuinely interested in having, all while making teachers’ lives easier. Its ultimate goal is to make the world a more thoughtful place.

Raising Critical Thinkers

Author Julie Bogart has written two books related to critical thinking and children. The first, Raising Critical Thinkers, is “a guide for parents to help children of all ages process the onslaught of unfiltered information in the digital age.” The second, Becoming a Critical Thinker, is an “accessible workbook…full of valuable insights, thought-provoking questions, and useful exercises to help teens and preteens expand their perspectives, skillfully navigate thorny issues, recognize bias, identify misinformation, and become more comfortable with dissent and differences of opinion”.

Does Coffee Cause Cancer?

Part science book, part romantic comedy, this book by Dr. Chrisopher Labos teaches about key issues that make medical research so hard. A medical doctor and epidemiologist goes to a medical conference and bumps into a series of colourful characters, debunking a variety of food myths along the way. Learn about topics such as selection bias, p-hacking, confounding variables, and the basics of epidemiology through this unique blend of genres. Recommended for ages 16 and up.
